The AJ can reveal the shortlists for 2022's AJ Architecture Awards in the school and both higher education categories
In the School category, two major retrofits feature, both of which were covered in depth by the AJ earlier this year: van Heyningen & Haward's conversion of a historic radio station into a school in Rugby and St Paul Cathedral School's new infill boarding house development by Kilburn Nightingale. Other big names on the shortlist include BDP, dRMM, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and WilkinsonEyre.
The Higher Education up to £20 million project category features two schemes for the University of Oxford: Gort Scott’s St Hilda's College and Wadham College by AL_A.
Meanwhile the Higher Education £20 million and over category includess Grafton Architects’ most recent London university project, The Marshall Building for LSE, following on from its Stirling Prize win last year for Kingston Townhouse.
In total, over 140 projects have been shortlisted across 19 categories for this year’s AJ Architecture Awards, the annual showcase of the very best built projects in the UK.
The expert judges, who have started visiting every shortlisted scheme and will continue to do so over the summer, include Kirsten Lees of Grimshaw, Biba Dow of Dow Jones and engineers Webb Yates co-founder Steve Webb.
Also on the judging panel are Sumita Singha, Daisy Froud and previous AJ Architecture Editor Laura Mark.
In addition to stand-out design, the judges will consider how each project has met or exceeded its brief, how it has promoted client or community engagement and how it has excelled in the use of space or sense of place. They will also analyse what sustainability measures have been put in place.
The winners will be announced at a gala event at the Hilton Metropole, London, on 23 November. Find more details and book here.
