Guests gathered for this year’s Métis Fest celebrations were treated to the unveiling of the 3D model showcasing the new design of the McMurray Métis Cultural Centre.

Peter Hansen, President of the McMurray Métis Local 1935, revealed the model of the part-building, part-monument structure in the shape of the Infinity Loop Symbol.

“We are pleased to announce the project continues to be on budget and schedule. We have a world-class team constructing the building and things are really starting to take shape on MacDonald Island.”

Hansen said he hopes people will share in the excitement for the 46,000 sq. ft. McMurray Métis Cultural Centre.

In 2020, RMWB Council approved the transfer of eight-acres land to the McMurray Métis for construction to further the goal of reconciliation and restorative justice.

Members of the local Métis government broke ground on Sept. 2, 2020.

The Cultural Centre will house the administration and business wing, and serve as a community hub and meeting place for community members to learn about Métis culture.

“Key spaces include four multipurpose rooms, a 65-seat theatre, a rooftop terrace that will seat 115, a 320-seat indoor gathering space, a teaching kitchen, a 500-seat outdoor amphitheater and a 5,000 sq. ft. museum space dedicated to telling the stories of the north-east Alberta Métis experience.”

Vancouver-based Mindful Architecture is the firm in charge of the building’s design.

The group, which is also looking after construction of the Casman Building, specializes in green, energy-efficient, carbon neutral structures.

More information about the McMurray Métis Cultural Centre is available on the McMurray Métis website.

Construction should be completed in the spring of 2024.
